A State-by-State Assessment of Education Data Transparency
Education data is critical to understanding whether or not America’s children are getting the education they deserve and the education that will prepare them to be successful. We have learned that transparency in education data can help us celebrate well-deserved school successes and inform conversations about efforts to improve our schools.
This report provides a systematic and deeper understanding of how state education agencies compare across a set of three broad dimensions of education transparency: accessibility and access, quality, and disaggregation for key students groups. Parents, advocacy organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders need this information to understand the performance and quality of schools in their state.
The report also highlights areas of common success and challenges in the sharing of education data, examples of states that are leading the way with transparency, and provides suggestions on ways to address some of the most common barriers that states face.
Errata:
We regret that due to an oversight the District of Columbia was rated too low for the disaggregation of its Test and Growth data in our original report. We have corrected those ratings in our analysis and this correction results in the following changes to the report
- Figure 1 on page 7 changes to place the District of Columbia (DC) in the 41st position just above Oregon (OR) and just below Nebraska (NE)
- In the results table for the District of Columbia in Appendix C on page 16
- The overall score for the District of Columbia increases from 1.8 to 1.9
- The score for the Disaggregation dimension on Test Score data increases from 3 to 4 and the data type average for Test data increases from 3.7 to 4
- The score for the Disaggregation dimension on Growth data increases from 3 to 4 and the data type average for Growth data increases from 3.7 to 4
